Interview Woes

May 3rd I submitted an application with my resume.

May 4th I received an email inviting me to take the company’s online assessments.

May 5th I received an email asking my availability for a phone interview.

I was so excited as this seemed to be a promising job offer.

May 6th I had a fifteen minute phone interview.

You know how legally interviewers can’t ask you certain questions, but there are legal ways around those questions? That’s exactly how this interview was.

I was asked when I graduated high school. (Age thing doesn’t bother me, but this was clearly to just ask my age because high school shouldn’t matter considering I have a BS.)

I was asked where I went to high school, which led to another question. (I’ve lived in four different states since 2002.) I was asked if my dad was in the military, which prompted me to say, “No, my husband was.” Why does it matter if I’m married?

I was asked about gaps in my employment—twice. I explained my most recent and longest gap was due to going back to school full time. I was then asked about the gaps before going back to school, which prompted me to say, “I started a family.” Why does it matter if I have kids?

Overall, the whole interview had a very weird vibe to it. It still seemed semi-promising as he said that he’d like to do a skype interview at some point.

May 8th I sent a follow up email about our interview.

May 9th I have yet to hear anything back. While it’s only been a day since I sent the follow up email, it’s the longest gap since the emails started, which makes me think there will not be a skype interview, which in turn means no job.

I bet anything if my answers would have been different, this would not be an issue.
